The Role:

The Crisis Counsellor Advocate provides trauma-informed counselling, advocacy, information, and referral services to victim survivors of sexual violence, including adults, children, and young people, as well as their supporters. The role delivers both scheduled counselling and crisis intervention support, including participation in a 7-day crisis roster providing telephone counselling between 7am and 11pm and attending after-hours crisis callouts to medical, police, and forensic services when required.

The position supports clients through immediate crisis response as well as ongoing recovery, including navigation of legal, justice, and support systems. It involves working within specialist crisis services, providing high-level clinical judgement and emotional support in complex and acute situations. The role operates under general direction with a high level of autonomy in workload management, prioritisation, and service delivery within a trauma-informed framework.

Key responsibilities include providing crisis counselling and ongoing therapeutic support, participating in the telephone crisis roster, and attending after-hours callouts as required. The role also includes advocacy, information, referral, and support services, assisting clients with legal and justice system navigation, and preparing reports and documentation for external agencies. Additional duties include outreach and community-based support, contributing to education and prevention activities, maintaining accurate records and data, and providing consultation and debriefing to colleagues.

Essential Criteria:

  • Tertiary qualification in Social Work, Psychology, Counselling, or significant relevant experience
  • Demonstrated experience supporting survivors of sexual violence, domestic violence, or trauma-related presentations
  • Strong understanding of feminist, human rights, and trauma-informed practice frameworks
  • Ability to manage crisis situations with calm, sound clinical judgement
  • Strong advocacy, communication, and report writing skills
  • Ability to work independently while contributing to a team environment
  • Knowledge of safeguarding procedures and risk assessment
  • High level of computer literacy and record keeping skills
  • Current driver’s licence
  • Current Working With Vulnerable People (WWVP) card or ability to obtain
  • Right to work in Australia
  • Experience within community legal, advocacy, or sexual violence services
  • Knowledge of ACT community services sector and referral pathways
  • Familiarity with forensic, medical, or police liaison environments
