The role:

As a Child Advocacy Officer, you will play a vital role in assisting families whose children have been removed or are at risk of removal. You will work directly with families, legal representatives, and cultural community members to advocate for children’s rights, access arrangements, kinship care, and reunification efforts. Your work will be grounded in trauma-informed, family-centered case management that respects and incorporates the strengths of Anangu culture.

Based in Alice Springs, this role covers the NPY lands so you will spend a lot of time travelling by 4WD to remorte communities where your support is needed the most. 

You will also support colleagues by providing training on Child Protection legislation, developing accessible resources, and building strong partnerships with legal services, police, and Child Protection agencies across the tri-state region.  Accurate record-keeping, reporting, and community engagement are integral to your day-to-day activities.

Requirements:
  • Tertiary qualifications in Social Work, Advocacy, Law, or Community Development, or relevant experience
  • Experience in case management or community development with families and children
  • Understanding of trauma-informed practice and cross-cultural environments
  • Ability to navigate Child Protection legislation and advocate effectively
  • Valid criminal history check, Working with Children Check, and First Aid certificate (or willingness to obtain)
  • Willingness to travel and work in remote locations, including operating or training on 4WD vehicles
  • Strong communication, organisational skills, and commitment to cultural respect and client wellbeing
